The Faison Approach

The Faison School for Autism uses a unique three-pronged approach of evidence-based treatment, research and community education to give each student the tools needed to improve their life’s journey.

Evidence-based Treatment

Only the most effective autism therapies are used, taught and shared at The Faison School. The school uses the principles of applied behavior analysis (ABA), recognized as the best method for long-term success in the treatment of autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disabilities. Students are instructed, both individually and in groups, in the areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing. All components of a student’s curriculum are individualized and personalized based on the student’s specific needs and implemented using evidence-based procedures and scientific teaching practices.

Simply put, The Faison School utilizes only proven methods and techniques that are shown to make a difference, including:

  • Comprehensive Application of Behavior Analysis to Schooling (CABAS®) accreditation
  • Virginia Association of Independent Specialized Education Facilities (VAISEF) accreditation
  • Individualized instruction
  • Small and large group activities
  • Community based instruction
  • Programs targeting academic literacy
  • Activities of daily living (also known as ADLs)
  • Pre-vocational and vocational training
  • VB-MAAP, ABLLS-R, C-PIRK and Brigance assessments


Since confirmed, verified methods are an important part of the educational approach at The Faison School, a great deal of emphasis is placed on staying up-to-date on research. The school is affiliated with the Applied Behavior Analysis Program at Teachers College, Columbia University and the Department of Behavioral Psychology at Kennedy Krieger Institute. These partnerships not only supply us with the latest in research but also provide service and training for the autism community. The Faison School uses this research to review and evaluate our instructional goals and revise our tools when necessary, making sure students take advantage of only the best methods.

Community Education

In keeping with our wholistic approach, The Faison School serves the Greater Richmond community by developing autism education practices for teachers, medical professionals, school professionals and the general public. Programs are implemented not only in the Richmond area but also throughout central Virginia, as we consult with local schools districts, train staff to work with individuals with autism spectrum disorder, and assist parents of children with ASD and other developmental disabilities.
